98% of all businesses in the EU are small and medium enterprises (SME). They play a key role for employment, innovation and education. Thus it is not surprising that many EU programmes focus on the promotion of SMEs. COSME and the InnovFin instruments are well known to the SME community. Furthermore, almost a quarter of the means of the Investment Plan for Europe are foreseen for SMEs. What challenges do SMEs face in their respective markets? Are the EU instruments equally suited to meet the challenges in all member states? The first step to answering these questions has been undertaken by a joint effort of Bpifrance (France), Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP, Italy), Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO,Spain) and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW, Germany). Building on their expertise they have each analysed their respective SME markets along common guiding questions. The main results of this extensive study will be discussed with key stakeholders.
